The Quintet formed in the summer of 2005, originally with a fairly mainstream Blue Note sound in mind .  It quickly became clear however, that the accumulative effect of each musician's influences  created a much more contemporary sound so Josephine began composing with the group  in mind.  Her writing is inspired by New York greats Walt Weiskopf, Donny McCaslin and Brad Mehldau, as well as the groove element of Chris Potter's Underground Band, Seamus Blake's Bloomdaddies and Joshua Redman's Elastic Band.

Pianist Ross Stanley

The members of Josephine's Quintet are drummer Nicholas Smalley, originally from Manchester, whose exciting playing is inspired by Jeff Ballard, Jeff Tain Watts and Brian Blade. Pianist Ross Stanley and Bassist Chris Hill, both fantastic young Guildhall graduates are becoming busy side men in their own right, playing with, among others, Jim Mullen, Gareth Lockrane, Gilad Atzmon, Renato D'aiello and Dylan Howe.

Trumpeter Robbie Robson, who runs his own band “Dog Soup” (inspired by Miles Davis' Bitches Brew) completes the front line bringing a unique sound and beautiful improvising.
